About Folks on Spokes

FOS--providing members with year round activities

Folks on Spokes Bicycle Club provides members with a wide variety of cycling activities while making an impact on the state of cycling in the Chicago south suburban area.

Primarily a bicycle touring club, Folks on Spokes is at the forefront of cyclist advocacy, working with various government agencies to insure that the needs of cyclists are considered when road improvements, trail construction and laws regarding cyclists are reviewed. The club has had much success in influencing area governmental bodies to remember cyclists.

Folks on Spokes provides members with opportunities to ride with cyclists of similar riding abilities, with a variety of weekly routes from 15 to 100 miles in length.  We have something for everyone.

Folks on Spokes Bicycle Club was formed in 1977 - by and for cyclists. Since then, the club has grown in size and stature, providing members with a wide variety of cycling activities while making an impact on the state of cycling in the Chicago south suburban area. Folks on Spokes currently has over 200 members from Chicagoland and  Northwest Indiana.

Although Folks on Spokes is dedicated to bicycling, during winter months the club expands it's activities to include hiking and skiing outings for members.

FOS--Advocate for bicyclists...

In 1992, Folks on Spokes was awarded the Pedal Power Award from the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation.  The Pedal Power Award is given annually by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation for "outstanding contributions in advancing the cause of bicyclists." FOS was the first of only two clubs to receive the award -- Evanston Bicycle Club in 1997 was the second.

Club members had just been successful in getting the Village of Park Forest to remove bike bans for adults on Western Avenue, Monee Road, Sauk Trail and North Orchard Drive, and had helped, with CBF, to develop the 1992 South Suburban Bikeways Plan.Folks on Spokes is at the forefront of cyclist advocacy, working with various government agencies to insure that the needs of cyclists are considered when road improvements, trail construction and laws regarding cyclists are reviewed. Other days feature "Show and Go" rides from various locations.Sunday rides feature route maps for all and ride leaders (on the shorter routes) who accompany the last rider. Other club rides are offered as well, including weekday evening "Show and Go" rides and overnight cycle-camping trips.
