2023 Spring Fling 4

What a great day for Spring Fling, 2023!  After a bout of blistering heat, the temps cooled off and it couldn’t have been a better day for our volunteers and riders.

We again set up at two locations.  Registration and the Start was at the Monee Reservoir with a rest stop at the Plum Valley Preserve, also known as “The Dog Park.”  Approximately 117 riders were able to join us for the day, enjoy the route of their choice, and relax afterward with snacks and entertainment.

We want to recognize and extend a special thank you to our members who stepped up and volunteered to help in any way.  JoDell, Sally, and Gerry were busy Thursday before the event marking roads.  JoDell and Kathy went grocery shopping Friday and picked up some delicious fruit and snacks, and other incidentals needed at the rest stops.

Kathy, Ed, and Irene set to work early Sunday morning, setting up the rest stop at the dog park. Irene made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry riders that would be stopping by along their route while Ed and Kathy set the table.  Sally and Eric came to the dog park later in the afternoon to greet additional riders and pack up at the end of the day.

It was an early start at Monee as well.  JoDell, Andi and  Mary Lynn  handled registration with added help from J.D from the Major Taylor Bike Club.

Joe went out early to mark the roads a second time after rain washed away the paint.  What a great help that was for the riders, as road markings are relied on for these long routes.

Wes, John and Grace took the lead at the Monee rest stop with others coming to help later in the morning.

Larry, Laura and Dennis handled SAG for the day.

REI sent out a bike mechanic and 150 packets of Power Gels!  We saw several riders taking advantage of his assistance.  Thank you, REI!

Entertainment was provided by the Elwood Garden Ukelele Group.

Members baked dozens of cookies that the Club Ride is famous for.  And of course, a special thanks to FOS President, JoDell, who worked tirelessly from beginning to end.

A team effort made this day a success for Folks on Spokes and the riders.  The combined efforts of the membership to support Spring Fling will not only benefit the club but the bicycling organizations it is able to support. Thanks to everyone!!!   See you next year.
